Chinese opera requires four essential learning techniques: singing, spoken – sung, playing and fighting. The characters in the classic Chinese opera are divided into four categories: men (sheng), that is to say, the young scholars (xiaosheng), warriors (wusheng) and old (mo ou wai) ; women (dan) , that is to say, the virtuous young women (qingyi) or pretty (Huadan) combatants (Wudan) and older women (laodan) painted faces (jing), specialized in singing ; clowns (chou), literate or fighters. The techniques are never transmitted in a dried or dry way, they are always put in parallel, firstly with a character, a situation, a story to play, the other with the traditional history of Chinese opera and its codes.
